How to draw an anime girl character in 7 easy steps

Are you prepared to reveal your inner artist and design an adorable anime girl character?

Creating anime can be a thrilling yet challenging endeavor, but it's actually simpler than you may believe! If you're new or wanting to improve, I can help you no matter what level you're at!

To create a charming anime girl character that will make your heart melt, simply follow these 7 simple steps! ;)))

Easy tips if you're a beginner in sketching and drawing

  • First of all, trust the process, literally no person started being the best painter, artist, singer, football player....we all have to learn in a different way and a different path, even if it's for hobby, for passion, or maybe for work. Try to be gentle with yourself and enjoy the journey and cheer up any progress that you're making.

  • You can try having an "ugly sketchbook", there you can draw literally anything that you want, that is yours and for you only, no one is going to judge you, tell you you're doing something wrong. With time you're going to see your progress in drawing from page 1 to page 134.

  • Don't run with the details, learn first the basic shapes and how things and their structures are made, if you look around you 99% of things are made with circles, squares, triangles....start with those. Details can wait.

  • Find your own style or the art that actually makes you happy, maybe you like to draw anime characters, maybe you like to sketch animals, maybe you're more into flowers and plants....the only limit is your own imagination.

  • Repeat the thing you wanna draw as many times as you need til you're satisfied with the result, maybe you have to draw a cat 15 times till it looks good for you, or maybe you have to try it 40 times and that's OK. Don't run.

  • Experiment with different types of drawing tools such as charcoal, neon pencils, watercolors...it will give you a different perception of things and it's completely okay sometimes to go out of your comfort zone and try new things.

  • And most important, have fun with it and remember it's a very positive way to express yourself.

Now that you know this tips on how to draw. ;)

Let’s get started! I'll guide you through the process of drawing a anime girl character from zero in just 7 easy steps.

Step 1: Start with Basic Shapes

Let's start by establishing the foundation! Begin by using simple shapes to form the framework of your character. Sketch a large circle as the head and include a vertical line for symmetry down the middle. Then, draw a basic triangle or oval shape for the chin region. This will assist in determining the facial shape and creating a charming jawline for your character.

  • Tip: Keep your lines light and loose—this is just a rough outline, and we’ll refine it later!

Step 2: Add Guidelines for Facial Features

Now that you’ve got the head shape, it’s time to map out where all the facial features will go. Sketch a horizontal line in the middle of the circle at eye level. Next, include two additional horizontal lines: one for the nose (positioned approximately in the middle between the line representing the eyes and the chin) and one for the mouth (situated roughly halfway between the nose and chin). This will assist you in maintaining proper balance!

  • Tip: Anime eyes are usually larger than life, so don’t be afraid to give your character some big, expressive peepers!

Step 3: Sketch the Eyes

Time to give your character some personality with those big anime eyes! Start by drawing two large ovals on the eye line. Don’t worry about making them perfect; just focus on getting the shape right. Inside each eye, draw the iris and a smaller circle for the pupil. Add a little highlight (a small circle or oval) to make those eyes sparkle!

  • Tip: Play around with the shape of the eyes to convey different emotions—wide for surprise, narrow for anger, and so on!

Step 4:
Draw the Nose and Mouth

Next, we will proceed by incorporating the nose and mouth. A basic line or a small "L" shape is sufficient for the nose. It should be positioned directly on the guideline of the nose. Next, draw a charmingly curved line along the mouth guideline. Depending on her personality, you can choose to give her either a shy smile or a big grin!

  • Tip: Anime noses are often minimalistic, so don’t overdo it—less is more!

Step 5: Add Hair and Ears

Now it’s time to give your character some fabulous hair! Start with the hairline just above the forehead and draw the outline of the hairstyle you envision. Anime hairstyles can be wild and wavy or sleek and straight—let your creativity flow, do it your way! Once you have the hair in place, add the ears on either side of the head, making sure they align with the eyes.

  • Tip: Use jagged lines or soft curves depending on the hairstyle you choose. Don’t forget to add some strands for texture!

Step 6: Refine the Face and Features

Having the foundational elements ready, it is now the moment to improve all aspects. Review your instructions and include additional features to the eyes such as eyelashes and eyebrows. To achieve a sweet and expressive appearance, sketch the eyebrows slightly arched above the eyes.

Adjust the shape of the face as needed and remove any unnecessary guidelines for a polished final look.

  • Tip: Don’t forget to give your character some blush by adding two soft circles on her cheeks!

Step 7: Finalize with Inking and Color

You're very close! After you have finished your sketch to your liking, take either an ink pen or a fine-tipped marker and meticulously trace over your lines. After the ink has dried, carefully remove any pencil markings. Next comes the enjoyable task of adding color! Utilize colored pencils, markers, or digital instruments to animate your anime girl. Experiment with bold colors to make her hair and clothes stand out!

  • Tip: Experiment with different shading techniques to add depth and dimension to your character!

Final Thoughts

And there you have it—your very own anime girl character, drawn in just 7 easy steps! Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempt doesn’t turn out exactly as you envisioned.

Keep experimenting with different styles, expressions, and poses. Most importantly, have fun and let your creativity shine!

Thank you so much for reading my blog, I hope that it helped you and wishing you a great day!
